PARENTS…GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!!! 👩🍳👨🍳
This is KIDS’ COOKING CLASS, and we’re taking Mental Health for Real Life straight into the kitchen.
Join other kids and teens from your own kitchen as we cook together online. We’ll provide the recipe ahead of time, you’ll pick up the ingredients, and then it’s time for the kids to take over.
Because cooking is about a whole lot more than food.
Following a recipe requires planning. Measuring ingredients takes focus. Waiting for something to bake takes patience. Realizing you forgot an ingredient takes flexibility. Asking someone for help takes communication. And when something doesn’t turn out exactly like the picture? That’s an opportunity to practice handling frustration and moving forward.
THAT’S REAL LIFE THERAPY.
Kids’ Cooking Class creates a fun, low-pressure environment where kids can practice social skills, executive functioning, independence, flexibility, confidence, communication, problem-solving, and managing anxiety while doing something real.
And there’s another important ingredient…
OTHER KIDS.
Sometimes sitting around trying to “socialize” can feel awkward—especially for kids who struggle with anxiety, making friends, starting conversations, or knowing what to say. Cooking gives everyone something to focus on together.
We can talk while we chop.
Laugh while we mix.
Ask questions while we measure.
Compare our creations.
Help each other figure things out.
And maybe even make a new friend along the way.
Nobody has to be a great cook.
Things might spill.
Someone might put in too much flour.
Something may get a little crispy.
Someone will probably ask, “WAIT…WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING?!”
Perfect.
Because learning how to handle the unexpected is part of the experience.
And parents…
PARENTS GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN!!!!!
Okay, okay. 😂 Stay close enough in case something truly requires an adult, but whenever possible, let your kid figure it out.
Let them read the directions.
Let them make decisions.
Let them ask for help.
Let them make mistakes.
Let them solve problems.
Let them build confidence.
That independence is part of what we’re cooking up too.
So grab your aprons, spatulas, measuring cups, mixing bowls, and appetites.
We provide the recipe.
You provide the ingredients.
The kids do the cooking.
Welcome to Kids’ Cooking Class.
Taking therapy out of the therapy office…and apparently putting it in the kitchen.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Kids and teens ages 10–18 who enjoy cooking, want to learn to cook, want a fun way to meet and interact with other kids, or could benefit from practicing social skills, anxiety management, executive functioning, flexibility, independence, and confidence in a real-life setting.
INSTRUCTOR
Randy Floyd, LSCSW, Founder, Clinical Level Therapist
Randy is the founder of Midwest Anxiety. He is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker who is an optimist and passionate about helping people focus on what they can do rather than what they can't do. Randy believes building a strong therapeutic relationship and tapping into a person's strengths are the most essential components of the therapeutic experience. Randy is passionate about changing the way we do mental health. He is focused on making mental health normal, a positive experience. He is also adamant about doing mental health differently. Randy believes the "old ways" suggest mental health is for the "broken" or "mentally ill." Randy believes that "Everyone Struggles." Sure. Some people struggle more than others, but everyone struggles with something. With this belief, Randy is focused on providing a wide range of programs and services to help people be mentally well ;) Go give Randy a fist bump on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
