Does your child suffer from excessive fears, worries, phobias, separation anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder or some other form of stress or anxiety such as clinginess, frequent stomachaches, nightmares, or even refusing to go to school? Do you want to help your anxious child but often do not know how? If so, consider attending got anxious kid.

Got Anxious Kid provides a safe and supportive environment in which parents of anxious children can develop a supportive peer network, while also learning how to help their child manage and overcome intense fears, worries, and stress with compassion rather than avoidance, accommodations, and constant reassurance. At the end of this class you will be able to answer questions such as “What if….” and “What do I do when…” Got Anxious Kid examines the manifestations and fuel of childhood and adolescent fears, while also providing parents with practical, scientifically proven Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) techniques.

Learning Objectives

Following the class, participants will be able to:
  • Describe how parents can gently and gradually expose their child to challenging situations
  • Describe the various manifestations and fuel of anxiety
  • Develop a supportive peer network with other parents of anxious children
  • Identify how to be a compassionate parent without fostering anxious behaviors
  • Recognize the “Do’s and Dont’s” to utilize when child becomes anxious
  • Recognize useful Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) and Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) techniques

Target Audience

Parents of anxious children who want to develop a supportive peer network, while learning useful techniques to be a compassionate parent without fostering anxious behaviors. Childcare will not be provided.

Schedule

Four Week Series:
Week 1
Overview of Anxiety 
The fundamental concepts of anxiety will be discussed including: the role of anxiety in “fight” or “flight”, true alarms, false alarms, and what keeps anxiety going.

Week 2
Thoughts 
Emphasis will be on “you can think any thought at any time”. A discussion of how thoughts either accelerate or decelerate anxiety will be explained. Cognitive reframing will be applied as a skill to decrease anxious thoughts. 

Week 3
Feelings
A discussion of how the human body prepares for “fight” or “flight”. An evaluation of how anxious feelings such as stomachaches, increased heart rate and breathing, dizziness may fuel anxiety.

Week 4
Behaviors
A discussion of the “fight” or “flight” response will be applied to avoiding, accommodating, and seeking reassurance during anxious episodes. Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) will also be discussed. 

Registration

Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Registration deadline is one week prior to class.
